It is a natural process as humans to dream and to want to expand our lives. Yet it has been said wisely by many before us that life is about the journey not the destination. The destination though, or the hope of it, is sometimes all that pulls you through the challenging times. But it is true. We must live now, as much as possible, and savour the gifts that this time brings.
If hope is all that pulls you through, then hold onto that with all of your heart. Staying present however offers incredible peace, by not having past wounds and conditioning or future fears to hinder the moment. Although it may be a painful process to get to this place of presence within yourself, to break through the resistance of the old ways, the rewards are definitely worth it.
So how do you do both, live presently and work towards your dreams?
You enjoy the process of growing, giving gratitude for both the moment you are in and for where you will be. Prepare yourself for the life you imagine while still appreciating the day on offer. Then when the dream eventually arrives as a physical reality in your life, it isalready a part of who you are.
It is not uncommon to be scared of success, of actually attaining your dreams. The fear usually comes about by thinking too far ahead and wondering too much as to how it will all come about and how it may change your life. But if you are able to maintain a sense of presence in working towards those goals, you find it is possible for each step to become gentle and clear instead of tumultuous and frightening.
The most accurate explanation of this process is by Henry David Thoreau when he said “I have learned, that if one advances confidently in the direction of his dreams, and endeavors to live the life he has imagined, he will meet with a success unexpected in common hours“.
You don’t just wake up one day and be ready for your dreams from a place of no preparation. You grow into them. And the only way to do this is to prepare yourself for the life you dream of and grow into it step by step.
All of this makes dreams so much more attainable, because you are bringing yourself closer to them all of the time and life rewards courage. Of this I have no doubt. I have lived from one leap of faith to the next for a long time and things have come to me in ways that even with my creative mind, I could never have imagined.
It is about faith certainly, and I have written of this often, but it is also about preparing yourself. It is about readiness. Work towards your dream, regardless of how many detours and road blocks may challenge you along the way. Keep your vision clear yet flexible, as you may end up exceeding your initial vision, through the many gifts of learning that you accumulate along the way.
None of this will be achieved however, without the courage to begin, to take that first step. You must begin, knowing that you are working towards your heart’s desire, yet keeping your eyes open to the gift of life unfolding in the meantime.
If you miss out on the present life in the chase, then you will always be chasing. You will achieve your goals, but without fulfillment as you are depending on the destination to complete you.
By trying to stay as present as possible, the mind is also infinitely clearer. Less energy is wasted in trying to control the outcome, which ultimately just blocks the flow anyway. And a clear mind is more receptive to the signposts and opportunities along the way.
Life is certainly about now. But dreams are a natural accompaniment to the journey.
So begin. Like a little child with a blank piece of paper to draw on, there will be a vision to work toward. It may turn out looking differently than initially imagined, but is that not a beautiful thing?
Work towards changing your ways, however that needs to be, regardless of how much this may challenge you, and it will. Just keep preparing yourself. Get ready for the life you desire. Make space for the dream to unfold in your life. Grow into it. It wants you too.
Get yourself ready. Get yourself set. And before you know it, you are going. The momentum now supporting you has been building through all of your preparation over the years. And now life is rewarding your courage.
And instead of it being a frightening time where you hinder your success with fears by thinking too far ahead, you are able to be present and thoroughly enjoy your success, as you have already grown into it.
You are ready.
